Colouring Black & White Photographs
These days we can very easily and cheap take plenty of
photographs any time and anywhere with small digital cameras, very often
built-in mobile phones. All of those photographs are in colour now. But before
digital age people have used the cameras with old-fashioned films for more 100
years and they took the most of them in
black and white because they were simpler and cheaper to produce.
A lot of people demanded to see the photographs in full colour and they started to colourize the black and white photos. They understood that image in full colours can impress people much more giving them amazing experience as they can spot more details in them and much deeper. Colourizing black and white photos has been realized since the beginning of photographs. At the beginning of 20th century famous Georges Melies coloured by hand film “Trip to the Moon”. To give an idea how hard that work was let me do some calculations here. This film was pretty short, just about 15 min long. As you know, 15 min has 900 sec and for shooting speed 18 frames per second this film has 16200 frames. Every single frame was probably coloured by hand so you can see how long could it take and many people have been involved in doing that. Despite that hard work Georges Melies wanted to make this film coloured.
Photo colouring is not so easy process and it requires some artistic skills of assigning appropriate colour for each element of the photo.
Below there are examples of our work in colouring black and white photographs. We will gradually add some more.
The first photograph has been coloured for Mrs Shay from Dublin. Next photograph has been restored and coloured for Mrs Alicia from London.
